Beijing, China

With more than 3000 years of rich and fascinating history, Beijing is the cultural and political heart of China. Beijing is also the second most populated city in the world, but you shouldn’t feel overwhelmed by its size. You can easily explore Beijing and reach its most iconic attractions using its metro system, one of the largest ever built. Fares are distance-based and a single ride starts at 3 CNY (about 0.50 USD). The city’s flat terrain and dedicated infrastructure make travelling by bike another great option for getting around and exploring.

Beijing is built in a series of rings centered around the Forbidden City. The seat of Chinese imperial power for over 500 years, the Forbidden City was built in the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty; the Imperial Palace is a true testament to Chinese culture and is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Just outside of the gates of the Forbidden City, you’ll find the impressive Tiananmen Square surrounded by monuments and government buildings, including the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and Great Hall of the People.

For a relaxing day outside of central Beijing, take a trip to the Summer Palace in the northwest side of the city and appreciate the beauty and harmony of its construction and surroundings. Overlooking Kunming Lake and featuring a backdrop of mountains, the palace provides the perfect setting for peaceful contemplation.

And don’t miss out! Just outside of Beijing you can also spend time along the Great Wall and be awed by how massive it is.
